During the third day of the first Test match against England in Leeds, Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant expressed his frustration towards the umpire by throwing the ball after a heated exchange. This incident has quickly gained traction on social media, with footage showing Pant initially conversing with the umpire before tossing the ball onto the ground. There are speculations that Pant may face a fine for his actions.
In the first session of play on the third day, Pant, who serves as the vice-captain, requested umpire Paul Reiffel to change the ball, but his request was denied. Following this, Pant visibly upset, threw the ball onto the field. The video captures Pant appealing for a ball change, only for the umpire to dismiss it, suggesting it might be changed later. After the umpire's refusal, Pant's frustration led him to discard the ball.
Throughout the first session, Indian players frequently debated with the on-field umpires regarding the condition of the ball. Jasprit Bumrah was also seen discussing the matter with the umpire in the footage. As the game approached the 60-over mark on the third day, Pant was observed requesting Reiffel to use a gauge to check the ball's size.
Reiffel utilized the gauge, and the ball passed the inspection without issue, leading him to reject Pant's request. Pant then urged the umpire to recheck the ball, but Reiffel remained firm in his decision. A couple of overs later, captain Shubman Gill made another attempt to request a ball change from the umpire, which was also denied.
